Hello Sweet friends! đ
What an absolute whirlwind of gratitude and joy itâs been since launching this space and connecting with youâwhether youâre just around the corner or reading from afar. The Holy Spirit has been moving powerfully through these first few blog posts and creative moments I get to share with you here. đđ
đ The Holidays: A Time of Joy⊠and âStuffâ
As Christmas draws near (the holiest of holy days! đ«), life can feel like a beautiful mess. Some of us get tangled in family drama (I see you!), while others might be quietly struggling with loss or unexpected changes. If youâre feeling tension, sadness, or even a little alone, please knowâyou're in good company, truly loved, and never alone. đ
đ The Valleys Are RealâYou Are Not Alone
Recently, I went live on TikTok with my dear friend Barry Spears (a faithful Stephen Minister & part of the leadership team â€ïž). We opened up about those âvalley momentsâ that life throws our way:
đ€ Medical diagnoses & tough health news
đïž Loss of a loved one (or âunbelovedââclosure is so tricky)
𧩠Relationship changesâmarriage, friendships, jobs, family dynamics
Sometimes these feelings are just too big for our closest circle. đ Thatâs when it helps to have a safe, caring personâsomeone outside our immediate crewâready to listen with an open heart.
đłÂ My Lifeline: Discovering Stephen Ministry
Hereâs where things get really personal. In 2018, I found myself in a difficult season. Moving to Georgia had brought up deep homesicknessâa longing for a home that no longer existed and for family connections I missed more than I realized. This sense of disconnection reopened wounds from losing my dad, especially as I found myself turning to Scripture for comfort.
Iâd once asked my dad to do his best to hold on until after my birthday. My Heavenly âAbba Fatherâ honored that prayer. My dad passed away just days later, on January 3rd, 2012âand my heart broke all over again.
Fast forward to December 2023, and my marriage entered a season of separation. The pain and questions only grew.
It was during these valleysâthese raw, aching chaptersâthat God reached out to me through Stephen Ministry. I vented, cried, screamed, and wrestled with my emotions, yet my Stephen Minister stood by meâcalm, present, and unshakenâno matter what I was feeling. Their steady, compassionate support made all the difference when the waves of grief and anger hit hardest.
đ€Č So, What Is Stephen Ministry?
Stephen Ministry was founded in 1975 by Dr. Kenneth Haugkâa pastor and clinical psychologistâwith one mission at heart: to provide one-to-one, Christ-centered care for anyone walking through lifeâs valleys. đ€Čâš
No matter your background or where you are on your spiritual journey, Stephen Ministry is here for youâwhether youâre facing grief, illness, divorce, job loss, loneliness, or a major life transition. đ±đđ©ș You donât need to belong to a particular church; support is open to all. đ
Stephen Ministers arenât professional counselorsâtheyâre compassionate church members who complete over 50 hours of specialized training in listening, confidentiality, and caring for others through crisis. đ§âđâ€ïž Their gift? Simply showing up, being present, and offering faith-based support rooted in Christ-like love. Think of them as prayer warriors who step into your story with empathyânot advice. No âfixing,â no preachingâjust being with you in your hurt. đĄïžđ
For your comfort, women are paired with women and men with men. đ»đŹÂ Most Stephen Ministers meet with their care receivers weekly for about an hourâa safe, confidential space where youâre free to be fully yourself. đ«¶đ€
If youâre looking for a compassionate ear or curious to learn more, Stephen Ministry can be your lifeline through the valley. đđïž
âȘÂ Across Denominations: Godâs Love Knows No Borders
There was a time I wondered if I really âqualifiedâ as a care receiverâespecially since Stephen Ministry started in the Lutheran tradition. God quickly showed me His love knows no labels or borders!
My testimony began in a beautifully unconventional way with Reverend Sheri Smith, Associate Pastor (now a retiree đđœ). Her wisdom, patience, and genuine faith blessed me through deep-dive Bible studies đ and one-on-one sessions. Together, we explored every book the Lord laid on our hearts.
From there, my faith journey brought me (by Godâs leading!) under the wings of Andy Stanleyâs churchâofficially ânon-denominationalâ đĄ, but connected to Baptist , roots through his father, Charles Stanley (may he rest in peace đïž). When I say âgraduated,â I mean I literally spent 2-3 years soaking up every Sunday message, eventually ârunning outâ of new content!
SO I hopped over to his best friendâs church: Louie Giglioâs Passion City Church in Buckhead, Georgia, where âretiredâ Sheri is now part of their volunteer hands.
But my soul craved even MOREâSunday best, every day! Then, unexpectedly, into the loving embrace of the Roman Catholic Church. For about 6-7 months, I learned the âorder of the Massâ with another amazing Catholic convert, Angie KC. I thought I had missed my chance for confirmation and the Lordâs Supper, but God said otherwiseâthe journey continued! âïžđđ·
By Fall 2020, I started RCIA (The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). God took me seriously, even when I doubted myselfâHis compassion never asked for credentials or a perfectly cleared path. đŠđ
Through all my valleys and baggage, God was readyâahead of me and for meâsending just the right people and, eventually, the caring presence of Stephen Ministers. My first experience was via Sheri. Later, God brought me Stephen Ministers through a Catholic parish!
Special thanks and love to Our Ladyâs Immaculate Heart in Ankeny, Iowa, for training so many Stephen Ministers to care in this unique way. đ€
đ You Donât Have to Walk Alone
If youâre in a valley right nowâwhatever it looks likeâI hope you let this truth sink deep: Youâre not a burden. Youâre not invisible. God loves you wildly, just as you are, and support is closer than you think. đâš
If youâre curious about Stephen Ministry, or longing for someone to walk beside you in this season, visit their website đ or talk to a caring leader at a local church. You do not have to journey alone.

P.S. I have to leave you with the song that completely wrecked me this Sunday night as I typed these words:đ¶ 'God, Iâm Just Grateful for You' by Elevation Worship đ¶
âWho am I that You keep me on Your mind?
God, Iâm just grateful for You (hey)
God, Iâm just grateful for You
All my life, Youâve been right here by my side
God, Iâm just grateful for You
God, Iâm just grateful for You (who am I?)âŠ
You ARE loved. You ARE seen. You HAVE/WILL surviveâand you ARE never without hope. đ«đ€
