What Is a Saint?
A saint (from the Latin sanctus, meaning âholy oneâ) is someone who has been made holy by the grace of God. Saints are not perfectâbut they are set apart, sanctified, and strengthened by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
đ Biblical Perspective
In Scripture, the term saints refers to all true believers in Christ who have been made holy by faith.
đ Romans 1:7Â â âTo all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints...âđ Ephesians 1:1Â â âTo the saints who are in Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus.âđ 1 Corinthians 1:2Â â â...to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints...â
In the New Testament, saints are the everyday faithfulâthose who follow Jesus and live set apart for Him.
đïž Catholic and Orthodox Tradition
In Catholic and Orthodox teaching, a canonized saint is someone who has been formally recognized by the Church as being in Heaven. These holy men and women are:
Examples of heroic virtue and unwavering faith
Intercessors who pray for us before the throne of God
Witnesses to the transforming power of grace
They include martyrs, missionaries, mystics, mothers, fathers, and even ordinary people who lived with extraordinary holiness.
đŹ A Word of Encouragement
I believe the Holy Trinity finds joy when we call upon the heavenly court, especially during times of temptation. When we invoke the saintsâespecially those who struggled with similar trialsâwe're asking our spiritual brothers and sisters to lift us up in prayer, that we may remain pure, courageous, and faithful in our perseverance.
đ Where Are the Saints in the Bible?
đ Old Testament (Foreshadowing of Saints)
Psalm 30:4Â â âSing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name.â
Daniel 7:27Â â âAnd the kingdom... shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High...â
Here, âsaintsâ refers to those loyal to Godâeven in exile or persecution.
đ New Testament (Believers as Saints)
Romans 1:7Â â â...called to be saints.â
1 Corinthians 1:2Â â â...to those sanctified in Christ Jesus.â
Ephesians 1:1Â â â...to the saints who are in Ephesus...â
Paul refers to all believers as saintsâthose sanctified by Jesus and made holy.
đ Heavenly Saints and the Communion of Saints
Revelation 5:8Â â â...golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.â
Revelation 8:3â4Â â â...the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne.â
These verses show that saints in heaven continue to pray and intercede for us.
